Diversity and Equality Committee (equivalent tasked by the Administration or Governing body) / Programmes and Trainings

The KIIT Deemed to be University has a fully functional diversity and equality committee, tasked by the administration or governing body to advise on and implement policies, programmes, and training related to diversity, equity, inclusion and human rights on campus.

Admission and employment in the Deemed to be University shall be open to all, regardless of race, religion, caste or creed, disability, immigration status and the area/ place of residence in the world’. Besides, clause 13.2 of MoA of the University also states that ‘All policies and procedures, in this regard as applicable to KIIT’.

Sub-Clause 13.1.1. There would be no discrimination on the ground of caste, religion, gender, disability, ethnicity, immigration status etc. to the general public while freely availing the educational resources of the university as per the requirement.

The constitution of the Committee as:

  • A Presiding Officer who shall be a woman faculty member employed at a senior level (not below the rank of Professor) nominated by the Vice Chancellor – Presiding Person
  • Two faculty members and two non-teaching employees, preferably committed to the cause of women or who have had experience in social work or have legal knowledge, nominated by the Vice Chancellor.
  • Three student representative, if the matter needs the involvement of students
  • One member from non-government organizations or association committed to the cause of women or a person familiarly with the issues relating to discrimination.
  • Director, Student Counselling – Member Secretary

Roles and Responsibilities of the Committee:

  • Development of an dynamic governance system for implementation of equality along with diversity and inclusion in the campus.
  • Conduct of audits to check the accountability of the strategies followed for equality, diversity and inclusion and analysis of gaps found.
  • Review of implementation of existing policies and its progress.
  • Formulating customized policies and regulations for maintaining equality, diversity and inclusion and monitoring its effective implementation.
  • Re-dressal of grievances related to inequalities due to caste, creed, race, gender or disability.

The KIIT Deemed to be University along with its sister foundation, Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, stands tall as the world’s largest tribal residential institute. KISS provides holistic education, from kindergarten to post-graduation, entirely free of charge for tribal children from underprivileged backgrounds. Their focus goes beyond academics, ensuring students receive healthcare, nutritious meals, and a supportive living environment. KISS empowers tribal communities by nurturing future generations to become responsible and successful global citizens.

The Tribal Advisory Council (TAC) of KISS was constituted on 19th July 2021. It comprises persons of eminence from various tribal communities who advise the University leadership on matters pertaining to the welfare and advancement of the students in KISS and for overall institutional development. The members come from various walks of life such as academics, public service and social work. They have all been deeply associated with the Tribal people and have in-depth knowledge of the Tribal communities of Odisha, their unique cultures and their challenges.A working committee has been constituted for the promotion, protection and preservation of tribal cultural diversity and heritage.

  1. School of Comparative Indic Studies & Tribal Science – This school offers studies that define development in terms of sustainable goals and explore ways of going about these through the engagement of modern technology with traditional indigenous knowledge systems.
  2. School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures – This school seeks to redefine literature and culture across linguistic, racial and ethnic boundaries within a comparativist framework.
  3. School of Indigenous Knowledge, Science and Technology – Teaching and research pursued in the programmes of this school are oriented towards an interface of the systems of indigenous knowledge and modern and applied levels.
  4. School of Tribal Culture, Philosophy and Eco-spiritualism – This school offers ethnocultural studies of the tribes, their cosmological religious and ecological system of belief.
  5. School of Tribal Heritage and Tribal Indology – This school emphasizes the pedagogy of tribal culture and heritage as part of Indological Studies and work towards cross- fertilization.
  6. School of Tribal Legal Studies and Tribal Rights – This school deals with legal studies related to the socio-economic and legal issues of the tribals relating to the development, displacement, traditional rights to land, forest and ecology.
  7. School of Tribal Resource Management – This school runs teaching and research programmes that impact knowledge and skills about tribal economic resources and their management in addition to honing the entrepreneurial skills of the tribal students.

The Kalinga Fellowship is a systemic change societal leadership platform to facilitate a breakthrough in thinking and strategy on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 that concerns gender equality. Within SDG5, the Fellowship has concentrated on issues related to gender-based violence. KISS was instrumental in establishing this proiect in joint partnership with the BRIDGE Institute, Ashoka Foundation, FXB India, Prajwala, UN Women and the US Consulate Hyderabad. This global programme annually brings together the most progressive leaders from business, government and civil society to facilitate a breakthrough in thinking and strategy to answer the question: How can the senior leaders of the government, business sector and civil society come together to combat trafficking of women and children globally?

It aims to tackle Target 5.2 of #SDG-5 on Gender Equality specifically addressing the issue of trafficking and calling for countries to “Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.”

Mini Marathon by KIIT and KISS 6,000 Women Run in Sarees at Pattathon Jan 27, 2025

The much awaited mini marathon, organized by KIIT-DU annually with the motto of ‘Education for All’, was held today across all districts of Odisha and various cities in India and abroad. This year, the marathon was held in 37 locations across Odisha and more than 65 places across India. A special segment of this event, called “Pattathon,” was uniquely conducted in Bhubaneswar. In its second edition, the Pattathon witnessed the participation of 6,000 women running while wearing traditional sarees. Organized with the themes of “Women Empowerment” and “Education for All,” the Pattathon featured women employees of KIIT, KISS, and KIMS, along with women from various parts of the state. Kiran Mahato from Rourkela secured the first prize of Rs 50,000, while Tejaswini Kispatta and Sasmita Behera from Cuttack won the second and third prizes, receiving Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000, respectively. Seven runners-up were awarded Rs 10,000 each. Additionally, all winners were gifted traditional sarees.

Curtains Come Down on the First Odia Language Conference At KIIT

The two-day first Odia Poets’ Meet, held as part of the World Odia Language Conference, concluded at KIIT. On the second day, the session focused on the relevance of poetry translation for the emotional development of language and culture, where distinguished poets participated in discussions. The speakers emphasized the careful effort needed by translators to ensure that the essence of the original poetry is not lost during the translation process. They expressed that poetry translation is a complex task but stressed the importance of always keeping the originality of the poem intact during translation.

KIMS Community Medicine Department Celebrates World Leprosy Day 2024

World Leprosy Day is celebrated on 30th January every year. The theme for this year was “BEAT LEPROSY”. On this eve, Department of Community Medicine, KIMS organized a free dermatological screening camp in the urban slum of field practice area of KIMS, Niladri Vihar. UHTC In-charge Dr. Geeta Chand Acharya, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine along with a faculty from Dermatology; Dr Sibaram Panda, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Skin and VD, KIMS kick started the camp by addressing the slum people and sensitizing them about Leprosy and its clinical features. It was followed by free dermatological screening camp and a rally to raise awareness about medical facilities available to eliminate Leprosy from the society, which was participated by Prof. Dr. B.K. Behera; Prof.( Dr.) Smrutiranjan Nayak; Prof.(Dr.) Ipsa Mohapatra, other faculties, Postgraduates, and staff. The interns carried placards highlighting the need to maintain clean surroundings and hygienic conditions to prevent Leprosy.

IRO, KIIT Organizes an Australian University Fair

An Australian University Fair was organized by the International Relations Office; KIIT Deemed to be University on 9th March 2024. Australia has emerged as one of the most sought after study destinations in the past decade. Six prominent Universities from Australia participated in the fair. Students from KIIT-DU interacted with the different University representatives and acquired first-hand information about their preferred university, the respective courses and information on scholarships and application process.

The universities that participated in the fair were, The Australian National University, Central Queensland University, Engineering Institute of Technology, Griffith University, The University of Adelaide and The University of Newcastle. The Australian University Fair turned out to be a useful platform for the promising students to initiate their Study Abroad Journey.

Department of Community Medicine, KIMS Organizes CME to Commemorate World Health Day, 2024

The Department of Community Medicine completed its two-week-long marathon of events to commemorate World Health Day with CME on 20th April 2024. The theme for this year was MY HEALTH, MY RIGHT, with speakers from across the country sharing their thoughts on different topics. The keynote speaker was Prof. Dr. K. Madan Gopal (Advisor-Public Health Administration, NHSRC-MOHFW, GOI) from Delhi, who spoke about Driving Innovations and Building Sustainable Health Systems for Better Health Rights in India-An Experience Sharing Session”. There were more than 150 registrations and participants which included Faculties & Post-Graduates from all Medical colleges and Public Health Institutions of Odisha in the CME. They actively took part in the discussion, making it interactive and very engaging. The CME was hosted by Dr. Priyanka Mohanty (PG, Department of Community Medicine, KIMS) & all the post-graduates served as the backbone of the CME.  Special Credits to Dr. Surya Prakash Routray and Dr. Dibyajyoti Mandal (PG Department of Community Medicine, KIMS) who looked after all Logistics for the event.

Youth Red Cross, Odisha and KIIT Host State-Level Training Camp for Counsellors

Youth Red Cross, Odisha, in collaboration with KIIT, organized a three-day State Level Training Camp for Untrained Counsellors from May 10th to 12th, 2024. More than 70 counsellors from various districts of Odisha participated in this training. The inaugural session was graced by Prof. Saranjit Singh, Vice Chancellor of KIIT-DU; Prof. J. R. Mohanty, Registrar; Prof. Samaresh Mishra, Director of Student Affairs; and Dr. Ramesh Chandra Behera, Youth Red Cross Officer, Odisha. This event marked a significant milestone in enhancing the skills and capabilities of youth counsellors across the state. The Youth Red Cross (YRC) has always played a pivotal role in fostering a culture of compassion, resilience, and service among young individuals. This endeavor has equipped the counsellors with the necessary knowledge, tools, and techniques to effectively support and guide the youth through various challenges they may encounter.

An eight-day in-person Faculty Development Program (FDP), sponsored by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), on Universal Human Values-II (UHV-II) was inaugurated at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) Deemed to be University on 14th June 2024.

Art of Giving Celebrated in 25000 Places Worldwide

The 11th edition of the International ‘Art of Giving’ Day was celebrated on 17th June, 2024 in 25,000 locations across 200 countries, including in India. In Odisha, the Day was celebrated in 35 cities, including the headquarters of 30 districts, as well as in every block and 6,500 panchayats. Each year, the Art of Giving is based on different themes, and this year’s theme was ‘Let’s AOG’. The worldwide movement was initiated by the Founder of KIIT and KISS  Dr. Achyuta Samanta on May 17, 2013 to promote peace, friendship, and happiness in the world, extending a helping hand whenever and wherever needed, establishing friendships with everyone, and respecting all.

Since then, every year, May 17 is being celebrated as International Art of Giving Day at various locations worldwide. This year, it was moved to June 17 in view of the general elections. Currently, the Art of Giving has over 20 million followers and 10 million members, spreading its message globally. It has coordinators in 200 countries, with coordinators present in every state of India and every block and panchayat in Odisha. It is an altruistic practice filled with selflessness, gratitude, appreciation, kindness, compassion, and humility. A person gains the greatest joy in life through sharing with others.

Hepatitis Awareness Camp by Youth Red Cross KIIT

On July 28, 2024, marking World Hepatitis Day, volunteers from KIIT University‘s Youth Red Cross Society organized a community outreach event in a slum area near RTO Square in Patia. They were accompanied by counselors Dr. Junali Jasmine Jena, Dr. Chitralekha Jena, Dr. Ajit Pasayat, and Dr. Ramesh Sethi, who aimed to raise awareness about Hepatitis. Dr. Ramesh Sethi explained the symptoms, causes, and prevention of Hepatitis, supported by three MBBS student volunteers from KIMS. During this two-hour educational engagement, residents were provided with crucial information about Hepatitis, emphasizing the importance of awareness in combating the disease. The outreach fostered a sense of community engagement, and refreshments were distributed to the participants towards the end.

International Relations Office, KIIT-DU, Organizes a Heritage Walk to Raghurajpur, Puri

The International Relations Office of KIIT Deemed to be University organized a Heritage Walk to Raghurajpur, Puri, on 24th August 2024. The program saw participation from 33 international students of KIIT, accompanied by officials from the International Relations Office, including Mr. Surya Kanta Tripathy, Senior Administrative Officer; Ms. Smarita Pati, Assistant Director; and Mr. Bijaya Panda, Manager-IR Hostel. Raghurajpur is a heritage crafts village renowned for its traditional Pattachitra paintings and other art forms, such as palm leaf engraving, wood carvings, and Gotipua dance. During the visit, the students were given a tour of the village, where they met and interacted with local artisans. This interaction allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the meticulous process involved in creating Pattachitra paintings and other traditional art forms, as well as insight into the community’s way of life. The students also purchased authentic handicrafts directly from the artisans, which was a significant step towards supporting the local artisans.

The Second Edition of the Study Abroad- Global University Fair was organized by KIIT International Relations Office on 28th September, 2024. The fair was inaugurated by Prof. Saranjit Singh, Vice Chancellor, KIIT-DU in the presence of the Pro-Vice Chancellor; and Registrar, KIIT DU.

42 Universities across the globe  participated and students gathered firsthand information about various universities, programs, and admission requirements, guidance on TOEFL, GRE and IELTS, housing for students, work opportunities in various countries during their studies at the respective countries, etc directly from the representatives of top Universities like University of Leeds, Sheffield Hallam, University of Bath, Newcastle University, Northeastern University University of Southampton, Monash University, Western Sydney University, University of Sussex, Massey University, Emlyon Business School, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Swiss Education Group, Switzerland, Wake Forest University School of Business, National University of Singapore to name a few. British Council, IDP IELTS and ETS Global also participated.

Department of Community Medicine, KIMS & Department of Health and Family Welfare, Odisha Organize Workshop on “Gender Mainstreaming in Health”

Gender-based violence (GBV) has been endorsed by member states in the 67th World Health Assembly as a public health issue, necessitating healthcare and other interventions. Health impacts of violence can last a lifetime, affecting physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health. Gender equality and freedom from violence, are critical determinants of health.

Department of Community Medicine, KIMS under the leadership of Head of the Department, Professor (Dr.) Sonali Kar, in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Odisha, organized a state level workshop on “Gender Mainstreaming in Health” on 25th November, 2024.

ICSSR-Sponsored International Conference on “Indigenous Knowledge for an Inclusive “Viksit Bharat” Concludes at KIIT

The KIIT School of Liberal Studies, and the School of Tribal Resource Management, KISS-DU jointly organized a two-day International Conference on “Utilization of Indigenous Knowledge of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups for an Inclusive Viksit Bharat” on 13th and 14th February 2025. The conference, supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Government of India brought together distinguished academicians, scholars, and policymakers to deliberate on the role of indigenous knowledge in sustainable development and inclusivity.

The event witnessed insightful discussions from eminent dignitaries, including Professor P.C. KIIT, KISS, and KIMS came together to celebrate International Women’s Day, reaffirming their commitment to gender equality and empowerment. Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KISS, expressed his deep appreciation for the contributions of women, emphasizing that the growth of KIIT has been driven by the respect and opportunities it provides to women. “What we preach, we practice. We have been promoting women’s empowerment since the inception of KIIT. He further noted that women have risen to occupy key leadership positions within KIIT, making it a model institution for inclusivity and equal opportunity.

More than 50 per cent of staff at KIIT and KISS are women, and the ratio is the same among the students as well. Women employees expressed their sentiments about their deep connection with KIIT and the sense of security and opportunity it provides. They highlighted how the institution has created a nurturing environment where both personal and professional aspirations can flourish.

In today’s convergent era where the real and virtual worlds overlap, the media plays a pivotal role in safeguarding human rights. Recognizing the importance of this theme, KIIT School of Mass Communication organized a special session on “Role of Media in Protection of Human Rights”, featuring Mr. Om Prakash Vyas — an international resource person on law and human rights, a practicing lawyer in the Supreme Court and High Courts, Head of the civil society organization BHIM, and Member of the Fact-Finding Committee on Human Rights Violations with Justice Narsimha Reddy. Mr. Vyas is also the former Joint Registrar (Law) of the National Human Rights Commission of India.

Royal Civil Service Commission of Bhutan Holds Interaction Session with Bhutanese Students at KIIT

Hon’ble Commissioner Dasho Kinlay Tshering and a team from the Royal Civil Service Commission, Bhutan, visited KIIT Deemed to be University on 26th May 2025. The visit began with a meeting with officials from the International Relations Office (IRO), followed by an interactive session with Bhutanese students studying at KIIT. ‘SASHAKT’-A Programme on Women’s Safety & Empowerment Organized at KIIT

On 30th July 2025, KIIT Deemed to be University’s National Service Scheme (NSS), in collaboration with the School of Economics and Commerce (KSEC) and the School of Electronics Engineering (KSOEE), organized the “Sashakt – Women Safety and Empowerment” program, a successful fusion of academic discourse and cultural expression. The programme, which witnessed the participation of over 300 students, was graced by Ms. Sonali Parmer (I.P.S.) as the Chief Guest and Prof. Krishna Chakraborty, Dean of KSAC and Member of ICC, KIIT-DU as the Guest of Honor.

A 35-member delegation comprising intellectuals, public relations officers of the Sri Lankan government, and policy makers visited KIIT and KISS on 25th August, 2025. The delegation, which is on a visit to India under an initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs, is visiting Odisha in coordination with the Information & Public Relations Department. As part of their Odisha tour, KIIT and KISS were the first institutions they visited.

During their visit, the delegates toured different campuses of KIIT and interacted with the students of KISS. They expressed amazement after learning about KIIT and KISS, and lauded the efforts of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KISS, for bringing tribal students into the mainstream of society through education at KISS.

Distinguished Invited Lecture on “Culture and Gender” Held at KISS-DU

Department of Sociology, School of Tribal Legal Studies and Tribal Rights (STLS&TR), in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), KISS-DU jointly organized a Distinguished Invited Lecture on “Culture and Gender” on 13th December 2025. The deliberations addressed Sustainable Development Goal – 5 and how to meet UN Agenda 2023. Dr. Sanghamitra Jena, Head of the Department of Sociology, Rajdhani College, Bhubaneswar was invited as the esteemed speaker.

Dr. Pragyan Mohanty, Dean, School of Tribal Legal Studies & Tribal Rights, in her Welcome Address focused on how culture plays a significant role in shaping gender roles and identities in society. She opined that social norms and traditions often influence attitudes towards masculinity and femineity. Dr. Mohanty concluded by expressing the need for academic discussions on culture and gender to promote gender equality, inclusiveness, and social awareness among students and researchers.

Keynote speaker Shri Pinaki Misra, MP & Senior Advocate, highlighted the judiciary’s role in safeguarding constitutional values. Prof. (Dr.) Saranjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, and Prof. (Dr.) N. L. Mitra, Emeritus Professor, shared insights on constitutional interpretation. Prof. Dr. Rose Varghese, Director, KLS, led a reading of the Preamble, reaffirming the Constitution’s commitment to justice and equality. The Bhima Bhoi Research Chair at KISS, a sister institute of KIIT Deemed to be University, in collaboration with G. M. University, Sambalpur, organized a Distinguished Lecture on “The Relevance of Bhima Bhoi in the Present Context” on November 3, 2023. Eminent scholar Professor Pabitra Mohan Nayak highlighted Bhima Bhoi’s advocacy for gender equality, social justice, and inclusion. Bhima Bhoi, a tribal saint-poet, challenged oppression and championed universal love and emancipation, especially for women. His philosophy of Mahima Dharma emphasized equality beyond caste and gender.

A three-day face-to-face Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Universal Human Values (UHV) was held at KIIT Deemed to be University from 8th to 10th December 2023.
