Collaborative Research Project with National Institute of Virology and World Health Organization to identify poliovirus and related enteroviruses among patients with primary immunodeficiency
The eradication of polio stands as a paramount initiative for the World Health Organization (WHO). In conjunction with the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Mumbai, an essential project has been launched to identify poliovirus and related enteroviruses among patients with primary immunodeficiency. This collaborative endeavor spans 21 esteemed institutions across India, including renowned names like Wadia Hospital Mumbai, PGI Chandigarh, SGPGI Lucknow, and NIMS Hyderabad. On February 17, 2022, a joint delegation from WHO and NIV Mumbai visited KIMS for a comprehensive assessment of site readiness and to provide necessary training. During the visit, the team familiarized themselves with KIMS and KIIT Deemed to be University, assessing both laboratory and hospital facilities. Interactions with Prof. A. K. Praharaj, HOD of Microbiology, and Dr. Raj Kumar Patra, Consultant at the Molecular Lab, were integral to their assessment. Impressed by the arrangements, the team granted KIMS permission to initiate the project, subsequently providing crucial training for the site investigators. This collaborative endeavor reflects a vital step towards enhancing public health and advancing scientific understanding.

John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health & KIIT & KISS Explore Prospects of Research Partnership
KIIT & KISS and the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, are exploring a potential partnership in the realm of ‘Climate Change Communication, Community Empowerment, and Advocacy: Local Action for Global Impact’. Professor Rajiv Rimal from Johns Hopkins recently held discussions with Professor Deepak Kumar Behera, Vice-Chancellor of KIIT & KISS, and other officials on April 16, 2022. Professor Rimal is engaged in a climate change project funded by the National Science Foundation of the US. The envisioned project involves gathering real-time air pollution data via Geo-Stationary Monitors from India and establishing data analysis protocols. The data would encompass not only air pollution levels but also health impacts on local communities. KIIT & KISS’s potential for collaborative research in Odisha’s tribal areas was emphasized during the meeting, with the availability of satellite centers discussed. The project’s scope includes addressing the adverse health effects of air pollution due to deforestation and mining on tribal populations. The collaborative initiative holds promise for knowledge generation and community-based environmental management.
Involvement with the Indian Council of Social Science and Research (ICSSR), Government of India
ICSSR was established in 1969 by Government of India to promote research in social sciences in the country which has led to SDG policy development in the national context. Few of the KIIT’s themed based research are to Improve Agriculture, Groundwater Quality, and Women’s Well-Being and create a more sustainable and equitable future for the region. By maximising nitrogen utilisation, the Nitrogen Management in Agriculture initiative aims to reduce fertiliser costs and increase the use of natural resources. This provides a route to healthier and more successful farming methods throughout South Asia. The Anthropogenic and Geogenic Contamination of Groundwater in Bhubaneswar Urban Catchment Project investigates how waste disposal, population expansion, and industrialisation affect groundwater quality, and the results will help guide government policy regarding the preservation of groundwater resources. The Swachh Bharat Mission’s initiative in Odisha, “Relationship between Household Sanitation and Women’s Experience of Menstrual Hygiene,” focuses on the crucial connection between menstrual hygiene and household sanitation in underdeveloped areas. The findings offer insightful information to decision-makers, thereby promoting women’s economic empowerment and well-being.
