Commitment to meaningful education around the SDGs

Formally, the University curriculum of the courses offered to students consists of topics and subjects centering around the sustainability development aims (SDGs). Environmental science, green technology, renewable energy sources, non-traditional energy systems, Quality Engineering & Management, Organizational Behavior, Tropical hydrology and Water Resources, Global Warming & Climate Change, Green Buildings, Environmental Chemistry, Solar Power Technology, Professional Ethics and Code of Conduct, and other topics are covered. Such courses are often available as mandatory or as electives. Students at the institution can choose from many of the courses mentioned above because it uses a choice-based credit system. School of Public Health (KSPH) has been functioning with the mission to (i) develop competent public health workforce and setting standards in various domains of public health; (ii) inculcate interventional approaches to public health research and technology and (iii) strengthen knowledge based application and evidence informed public health practice and policy. In order to pursue this mission, the school is engaged in producing knowledge through research, higher education, and translates knowledge into evidence that can be communicated to the public, policy makers and practitioners to improve the health of population.

School of Rural Management, KIIT: In the last 15 years of its existence, KSRM has emerged as one of the best schools in the country in rural management, through its imprints in teaching, research and consulting. Besides unique changes in the MBA (RM) Programme design, KSRM has now started diversifying its programme portfolio to certain niche fields in the development Sector. They offer programs in MBA in Rural Management, MBA in Agri Business and PG Diploma in Community Development which are revolving around the SDGs, primarily SDG 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13.

Post Graduate courses and research programmes in Tribal Studies is also offered by the University. KIIT signed MoU with UNDP to work for tribal development and sustainable development in Odisha.

Research on Rare Earth Metals on the following are being undertaken:

  • Prospecting/ exploration for strategic rare earth minerals Development of new technology for mineral exploration and mining on land and deep sea to locate and exploit new mineral resources;
  • Research in mining methods. This includes rock mechanics, mine designing, mining equipment, energy conservation, environmental protection and mine safety.
  • Improve efficiency in process, operations, recovery of bi-products and reduction in specification and consumption norms;
  • Research in metallurgy and rare earth mineral beneficiation techniques to utilize lower grade/ secondary and finer size ores. Extraction of value added products from mine waste, plant tailings etc;
  • Development of new methods, synthesis and applications of advance rare earth materials, new alloys and rare earth metal related products.

Schools of Rural Management and Biotechnology are also working in close collaboration with Chilika Development Authority (CDA), Govt. of Odisha for the holistic development of Chilika Lake and its community. CDA and School of Biotechnology have started a systemic approach to culture and characterize the bacteria from different sectors of lake.

  1. Documentation and conservation of bacterial resources
  2. Spatial and temporal dynamics of bacterial communities in context to nutrient cycling
  3. Isolation of novel bacteria and enzymes useful in biotechnology industries
  4. Monitoring of pollution and fecal indicator bacteria

  • Centre of Excellence on Renewable Energy has been functioning in the campus for advanced research

  • The University has always been following the ‘ Education for All’ maxim and have been working hard to achieve it. Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences – KISS, Bhubaneswar, India is a fully free residential home for 30000 poorest of the poor indigenous/tribal children who are provided holistic education from Kindergarten to Post Graduation along with lodging, boarding, health care facilities besides vocational, life skills empowerment.The University has also been providing free education along with accommodation and food to tribal students. In the year 2021, 7000+ students were pursuing higher education across all programmes of the University.

  • The University has well defined policies to collaborate with industry and bridge the gap if any between academics and industry requirements. To facilitate this process, the University has set up an industry engagement cell which has successfully collaborated with many industrial bodies and offer industry elective courses to the student. For Example- Media & Applications and Cloud Computing by Ericsson India Pvt Ltd.

  • Workshop on Gender Equity and Inclusion: Transformative Pathways in Higher Education Organized by KISS and KIIT Deemed to be University in association with Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace (WISCOMP)Supported by Public Affairs Section, U.S Embassy, New Delhi

  • Announcements in this regard are made through periodicals and dailies from time to time.

  • Faculty members are engaged in active research with many organisation and agencies in collaboration, the outcomes of which are expected to meet the SDGs.

  • There are also research scholars pursuing active work which address the sustainable development goals.

  • MoU was signed between KIIT and Logistics Sector Skill Council established by Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) through National Skill Development Corporation of India (NSDC) to accelerate the creation of efficient Human Resources with knowledge, skill and aptitude. Two programmes namely Apprentice-based BBA Degree Programme in Logistics and Apprenticeship-based BMS Degree Programme in E-Commerce Operations are being offered.
