Diversity and Equality Committee (equivalent tasked by the Administration or Governing body) / Programmes and Trainings

The KIIT Deemed to be University has a fully functional diversity and equality committee, tasked by the administration or governing body to advise on and implement policies, programmes, and training related to diversity, equity, inclusion and human rights on campus.

Admission and employment in the Deemed to be University shall be open to all, regardless of race, religion, caste or creed, disability, immigration status and the area/ place of residence in the world’. Besides, clause 13.2 of MoA of the University also states that ‘All policies and procedures, in this regard as applicable to KIIT’.

Sub-Clause 13.1.1. There would be no discrimination on the ground of caste, religion, gender, disability, ethnicity, immigration status etc. to the general public while freely availing the educational resources of the university as per the requirement.

The constitution of the Committee as:

  • A Presiding Officer who shall be a woman faculty member employed at a senior level (not below the rank of Professor) nominated by the Vice Chancellor – Presiding Person
  • Two faculty members and two non-teaching employees, preferably committed to the cause of women or who have had experience in social work or have legal knowledge, nominated by the Vice Chancellor.
  • Three student representative, if the matter needs the involvement of students
  • One member from non-government organizations or association committed to the cause of women or a person familiarly with the issues relating to discrimination.
  • Director, Student Counselling – Member Secretary

Roles and Responsibilities of the Committee:

  • Development of an dynamic governance system for implementation of equality along with diversity and inclusion in the campus.
  • Conduct of audits to check the accountability of the strategies followed for equality, diversity and inclusion and analysis of gaps found.
  • Review of implementation of existing policies and its progress.
  • Formulating customized policies and regulations for maintaining equality, diversity and inclusion and monitoring its effective implementation.
  • Re-dressal of grievances related to inequalities due to caste, creed, race, gender or disability.

The KIIT Deemed to be University along with its sister foundation, Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, stands tall as the world’s largest tribal residential institute. KISS provides holistic education, from kindergarten to post-graduation, entirely free of charge for tribal children from underprivileged backgrounds. Their focus goes beyond academics, ensuring students receive healthcare, nutritious meals, and a supportive living environment. KISS empowers tribal communities by nurturing future generations to become responsible and successful global citizens.

The Tribal Advisory Council (TAC) of KISS was constituted on 19th July 2021. It comprises persons of eminence from various tribal communities who advise the University leadership on matters pertaining to the welfare and advancement of the students in KISS and for overall institutional development. The members come from various walks of life such as academics, public service and social work. They have all been deeply associated with the Tribal people and have in-depth knowledge of the Tribal communities of Odisha, their unique cultures and their challenges.A working committee has been constituted for the promotion, protection and preservation of tribal cultural diversity and heritage.

  1. School of Comparative Indic Studies & Tribal Science – This school offers studies that define development in terms of sustainable goals and explore ways of going about these through the engagement of modern technology with traditional indigenous knowledge systems.
  2. School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures – This school seeks to redefine literature and culture across linguistic, racial and ethnic boundaries within a comparativist framework.
  3. School of Indigenous Knowledge, Science and Technology – Teaching and research pursued in the programmes of this school are oriented towards an interface of the systems of indigenous knowledge and modern and applied levels.
  4. School of Tribal Culture, Philosophy and Eco-spiritualism – This school offers ethnocultural studies of the tribes, their cosmological religious and ecological system of belief.
  5. School of Tribal Heritage and Tribal Indology – This school emphasizes the pedagogy of tribal culture and heritage as part of Indological Studies and work towards cross- fertilization.
  6. School of Tribal Legal Studies and Tribal Rights – This school deals with legal studies related to the socio-economic and legal issues of the tribals relating to the development, displacement, traditional rights to land, forest and ecology.
  7. School of Tribal Resource Management – This school runs teaching and research programmes that impact knowledge and skills about tribal economic resources and their management in addition to honing the entrepreneurial skills of the tribal students.

The Kalinga Fellowship is a systemic change societal leadership platform to facilitate a breakthrough in thinking and strategy on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 that concerns gender equality. Within SDG5, the Fellowship has concentrated on issues related to gender-based violence. KISS was instrumental in establishing this proiect in joint partnership with the BRIDGE Institute, Ashoka Foundation, FXB India, Prajwala, UN Women and the US Consulate Hyderabad. This global programme annually brings together the most progressive leaders from business, government and civil society to facilitate a breakthrough in thinking and strategy to answer the question: How can the senior leaders of the government, business sector and civil society come together to combat trafficking of women and children globally?

It aims to tackle Target 5.2 of #SDG-5 on Gender Equality specifically addressing the issue of trafficking and calling for countries to “Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.”

Programmes & Training Conducted in Year 2023-2024

The School of Fashion Technology, KIIT-DU, celebrated the 9th National Handloom Day on August 7, 2023, with an exclusive handloom exhibition, ‘Kritantuja-23.’ Prof. Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty, Registrar, felicitated National Award-winning weaver Bhikari Meher, applauding students for their creative displays.

Prof. Soumendyu S. Ray, Director General, School of Architecture and Planning, emphasized Odisha’s rich handloom heritage and encouraged wearing handloom products. The event highlighted the role of women in weaving, covering 70% of the sector. Winners of competitions on “Handloom & Heritage of Odisha” were awarded in Product Design (Ravi Krishna), Photography (Siddhant Gupta), and Painting (Armaan Swain). Ms. Gipsita Nayak, Deputy Director, also addressed the gathering, reinforcing the significance of the handloom industry and its modern-day relevance.

KIIT NSS Bureau celebrated National Unity Day on 31st October 2023, highlighting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in honor of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The event emphasized national integration and social harmony, graced by Sahitya Akademi Award winner Mr. Jitendra Narayan Dash, Prof. Jayanta Kumar Parida, Prof. Surekha Sundari Swain, and Prof. Kajal Parashar.

Mr. Dash stressed Patel’s role in uniting India’s diverse communities and praised NSS volunteers for their commitment to social equity and service. KIIT School of Law (KLS) celebrated Constitution Day on November 26, 2023, reinforcing its commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) and Human Rights. Organized by the Centre for Constitutional Law Studies and Research (CCLSR) and the NSS Unit of KLS, the event explored “Constitutional Silences, Unconstitutional Inaction.”

Keynote speaker Shri Pinaki Misra, MP & Senior Advocate, highlighted the judiciary’s role in safeguarding constitutional values. Prof. (Dr.) Saranjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, and Prof. (Dr.) N. L. Mitra, Emeritus Professor, shared insights on constitutional interpretation. Prof. Dr. Rose Varghese, Director, KLS, led a reading of the Preamble, reaffirming the Constitution’s commitment to justice and equality. The event fostered interactive discussions, empowering students to engage in critical conversations on governance and human rights.

The Bhima Bhoi Research Chair at KISS, a sister institute of KIIT Deemed to be University, in collaboration with G. M. University, Sambalpur, organized a Distinguished Lecture on “The Relevance of Bhima Bhoi in the Present Context” on November 3, 2023. Eminent scholar Professor Pabitra Mohan Nayak highlighted Bhima Bhoi’s advocacy for gender equality, social justice, and inclusion. Bhima Bhoi, a tribal saint-poet, challenged oppression and championed universal love and emancipation, especially for women. His philosophy of Mahima Dharma emphasized equality beyond caste and gender.

Chhath Puja, an important festival from Bihar, was observed with rituals like Kharna, Sandhya Argh, and Pratah Argh, symbolizing faith and gratitude. Shri Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman, Bar Council of India, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, appreciating KIIT’s commitment to inclusivity.

A three-day face-to-face Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Universal Human Values (UHV) was held at KIIT Deemed to be University from 8th to 10th December 2023. The program, facilitated by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, was organized and sponsored by KIIT-DU. Speaking at the inaugural session, Prof. (Dr.) Saranjit Singh, Vice Chancellor, KIIT-DU shared insightful perspectives on the significance of promoting universal human values within the educational realm, emphasizing their transformative impact on individuals and societies. The event saw active participation from 63 enthusiastic KSRM students pursuing MBA in Agri-Business Management and MBA in Rural Management. The festival employed a rich tapestry of artistic elements, including puppets, masks, and traditional dance forms representing diverse Indian states. The award, presented by KIIT & KISS Founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta at Tata’s Mumbai residence, recognized his lifelong contributions to social development and corporate leadership.

Despite his usual reticence, Tata accepted the award, calling it a “significant moment” in his life. The award, announced in 2021 but delayed due to COVID, reflects KIIT’s dedication to recognizing global humanitarian efforts.

The Department of Community Medicine, KIMS, commemorated World Health Day 2024 with a CME on April 20, aligning with the theme “My Health, My Right.” The event emphasized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in healthcare through insightful discussions by experts like Prof. Dr. K. Madan Gopal (NHSRC-MOHFW, GOI) and Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Bhardwaj (AIIMS Jodhpur).

A panel discussion highlighted the role of medical institutions in fostering health rights for vulnerable groups. Over 150 participants engaged in thought-provoking dialogues, while a Nukkad Natak and competitions reinforced social awareness. Observed in 25,000 locations across 200 countries, the event aimed to empower marginalized communities, ensuring equal opportunities and dignity for all. Odisha alone witnessed celebrations in 35 cities, all districts, blocks, and 6,500 panchayats.

With 20 million followers and 10 million members, Art of Giving embodies selflessness, gratitude, and compassion, reflecting KIIT DU’s commitment to an inclusive society. The initiative continues to inspire millions to embrace humanity through acts of giving.

KIIT Deemed to be University celebrated the grand Rath Yatra at Shrivani Kshetra on July 7, 2024, upholding the values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) through religious harmony and cultural participation. The festival, attended by over 50,000 devotees, showcased inclusive traditions, notably the exclusive participation of women in pulling Devi Subhadra’s chariot, reinforcing gender equity.

Conducted as per Jagannath Temple traditions, the event united people across backgrounds, fostering a shared spiritual experience. Rituals were performed under the guidance of Puri’s Gajapati Maharaja, ensuring authenticity. The vibrant participation of devotees, irrespective of caste, creed, or gender, highlighted KIIT DU’s commitment to human rights and social inclusion. The nine-day festival, with evening Bhajan Samarohs, continues to promote unity and cultural integrity.

KIIT Deemed to be University announced an initiative to create an encyclopedia on Odisha’s craft and establish a Craft Museum during the 3rd Kritantuja event on National Handloom Day at KIIT School of Fashion Technology. The project, inspired by Founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta’s vision to promote Odisha’s artisans globally.

Prof. Himansu Sekhar Khatua highlighted handloom as Odisha’s second-largest income source after agriculture. Dr. Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty emphasized the significance of artisans in India’s socio-economic landscape. The event featured competitions, with students actively participating.
