Access Schemes for People with Disabilities: Mentoring / Targeted Support

Leaving no one behind itself draws our attention to the one of the most vulnerable sections of the society, the differently-abled persons. Safeguarding their interests requires an entitlement monitoring of their actual needs rather than generalizing them with that of a common man. KIIT University is a pioneer in promoting innovation and inclusion of students with disabilities in Higher Education. With the motto of “Empowerment of the Higher Education”,Policy has been established in the year 2020 for empowering students with Disabilities in Higher Education.To maintain its smooth function,The “Equal Opportunity Cell”plays a active role in this regard.

Candidates will be considered eligible for admission under physically challenged category, who are having 40% disabilities in consonance with Section-39 of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Participation) Act,1995. The candidates having locomotory disabilities are only eligible.The three percent (3%) seats will be reserved for physically challenged  candidates.

Various types of Scholarships have been instituted by the University for encouraging meritorious students. The quantum of scholarship and period of scholarship is subject to change from time to time. Different scholarships, stipends and fee relaxations are available in KIIT Deemed University.

Adherence of KIIT Policy of Differentially abled person, The NIDHI-Promotion and Acceleration of Young and Aspiring technology entrepreneurs (NIDHI-PRAYAS) program is one of the programs introduced under NIDHI Scheme by DST, GoI that focuses on addressing the idea to prototype funding gap. This is a program designed to attract a large number of youngsters to come forward to try out their ideas and try to see if they will work in real life business situations.

The functions of the Enabling unit developed under UGC-Higher education for Persons with Special Needs (HEPSN) scheme are to:

  • To provide counselling to differently-abled students on the types of courses they could study at the higher education institutions.
  • To ensure admission of as many differently-abled students as possible through the open quota and also through the reservation meant for them.
  • To gather orders dealing with fee concessions, examination procedures, reservation, policies, etc., pertaining to differently-abled persons.
  • To assess the educational needs of differently abled persons enrolled in the higher education institutes to determine the types of assistive devices to be procured.
  • To conduct awareness programmes for teachers of the institute about the approaches to teaching, evaluation procedures, etc, which they should address in the case of differently-abled students.
  • To study the aptitude of differently-abled students and assist them in getting appropriate employment when desired by them after their studies.
  • To celebrate important days pertaining to disability such as the World Disabled Day, White Cane Day, etc., in the institute and also in the neighbourhood in order to create awareness about the capabilities of differently-abled persons.
  • To ensure maintenance of special assistive devices procured by the higher education institute under the HEPSN scheme and encourage differently-abled persons to use them for enriching their learning experiences.
  • To prepare annual reports with case histories of differently-abled persons who are benefited by the HEPSN scheme sanctioned to the higher education institute.

KIIT University aids the established Kalinga Institute of Social Science (Higher Education to Indigeneous Section) in implementing the LSE programme in partnership with UNFPA since 2009 and has in-house resource and capacity of managing programmes towards addressing the needs of children from vulnerable and marginalized communities. Since the LSE programme for the children with disability requires intensive effort for developing resource and communication materials for different types of disabilities (blind, deaf and dumb and physically/ mentally challenged). Under this intervention, the need and importance of Life Skills education will be advocated and capacities of stakeholders particularly the teachers and school management teams of the special schools will be built.

Grievance Redressal committee was set up at KIIT University in accordance with the University Grants Commission regulations 2012 (The Gazette of India, March 23-29, 2013) for handling day-to-day grievances. All students / staff in our University have access to the Grievance Redressal Cell to voice their concerns about academic matters, financial matters, health services, the library and other central services related to physical or mental harassment, grievance regarding ragging, sexual harassment complaints regarding class room teaching, class room management, completion of syllabus, teaching methodology, infrastructure maintenance and up-gradation, etc. The University strictly follows zero tolerence policy against Ragging, Sexual Harassment. The University has an exclusive dedicated column on official site where anyone can file their grievance then the application is transferred to the dedicated committee according to the issue either in online available “KIIT Grievance Service” form or via mail.
