Academic Freedom

The KIIT Deemed to be University supports academic freedom (freedom to choose areas of research and to speak and teach publicly about the area of their research)

Academic freedom is a fundamental principle in higher education that ensures scholars, educators, and students can pursue knowledge, research, teaching, and learning without interference, censorship, or fear of reprisal. Universities typically have an Academic Freedom Policy in place to protect and promote this principle. A well-crafted Academic Freedom Policy serves as a cornerstone for a free and vibrant academic environment, enabling faculty and students to engage in open and critical inquiry, contribute to the advancement of knowledge, and participate in informed public discourse. It protects the rights of scholars and educators while maintaining a commitment to ethical conduct and responsible scholarship.

Academic Freedom Policy 2020

Academic freedom refers to the ambiance, platforms or opportunities provided by the University allowing faculty members to engage in teaching, research, and related endeavors at higher educational institutions. Academic freedom encompasses the provisions necessary for the University to realize its mission towards instilling a habit of continual learning, encouraging and supporting creative abilities and research temperament, establishing and promoting close interaction with industries and other utility sectors, keep abreast with state-of-the-art technology and above all, inculcate a global perspective in attitude. Academic freedom permits its members to pursue their academic pursuits with diligence, with the understanding that all members of the University have the right to express their own point of view and to be audience to others views as well. The University is a place where all members can express themselves, while protecting and respecting the rights of others to learn, to do research, and to carry out necessary activities of the University without any interference or obstruction.

Policy for Faculty and Staff Members:

  • Faculty and staff members have the freedom to express their views on governance matters pertaining to their respective Schools, units, and libraries of the University.
  • Faculty and staff members can express their views with respect to their professional responsibilities without institutional discipline or restraint. However, they should exercise professional responsibility during their period of service in the University. They are also expected to respect confidentiality and privacy rights of others.
  • Faculty members can undergo research as per their choice and engage in collaborations as required within and outside the University.
  • Faculty members can partner with industry for floating industry-oriented courses and setting up centres of excellence, complying with the norms of the University.
  • Faculty members can take part and impart quality education programs or lectures in their area of research through Faculty Development Programs, Management Development Programs, and Executive Development Programs in the University and outside as well. They are expected to keep the University informed in this regard.
  • Faculty members can design their class curriculum; and take part in its revision and development of the course contents.
  • Faculty members can attend seminars/ conferences and present/publish papers in their areas of research interest.
  • Faculty members can provide free educational resources and lectures through designated portals. They are expected to keep the University informed in this regard.
  • Faculty members can provide feedback for academic, research and curricular development at any point of time to the head of the course committee, program head, or the Dean/Director of the School.

 

The University provides research freedom to senior as well as junior academician as per their choice and expertise. The University encourages the multidisciplinary research among various Schools. Any senior/junior academicians can carry out research works as per their wishes with collaborating with other institutions or industries

In the University all the faculty members have freedom about their research activity. Through online platform such as Google scholar, Scopus and ORCID, it is visible publicly.

The University provides teaching freedom to its senior as well as junior academicians as per their expertise.

Teaching freedom is given to all the teaching faculty members. They can choose their teaching subjects depending upon their expertise, and research interest in a particular program.

Different Activities Ensuring the Policy:

  • Academic Freedom is provided to faculty members so that they can undergo research as they choose.
  • Freedom is provided to choose the area of research and collaborate with colleagues and academicians from other departments of our university and other institutions.
  • Freedom to partner with industry for floating industry-oriented courses and setting up centres of excellence, complying with the norms of the University
  • Freedom to take part and impart quality education programs in research through Faculty Development Programs, Management Development Programs, and Executive Development Programs in the University and outside as well.
  • Faculty members design their own class curriculum, take part in its revision, and develop the course contents
  • The faculty members are allowed to attend seminars/ conferences and publish papers in their areas of research.
  • Multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and collaboration is encouraged in the University.
  • Faculty members are provided with the option of receiving free educational resources and lectures through designated portals.
  • Students are provided with Choice Based Credit System where they are offered a bouquet of courses belonging to their specialization and also from other departments to choose from (provided that the prerequisites are satisfied)
  • Students’ feedback is taken into consideration for topics and courses to be included in the curriculum.
  • Provision for Peer learning as ‘Flip Educator’, where senior students based on their academic excellence are provided a platform to handhold their juniors
  • Faculty members and research students deliver talks on their choice of research topic on a weekly basis which is open to the attendance of any member of the University and general public.
  • Availability of Students technical societies where students from different branches and years collaborate with faculty members of their choice to learn additional topics beyond curriculum and engage in multi-disciplinary research and product innovation.
  • The University organizes more than 100 conferences/ seminars/ workshops/ symposiums on campus yearly which are open to all students, faculty members, and staff across all programs and to general public.

 

Policy for Students:

  • Students can undergo research as per their choice and engage in collaborations as required within and outside the University. They are expected to keep the University informed in case of external collaborations.
  • Students can take part in quality education programs or lectures in the University and outside as well.
  • Students can choose courses of their choice using the provisions for choice-based credit system, open electives, audit courses, minors, and honours, as applicable to their curriculum.
  • Students can provide feedback for academic, research, and curricular development.
